How to deal with an interfering mother
Dealing with an interfering, difficult mother can be a wearisome and sensitive issue. Know that you’re not alone, many adults struggle with the double whammy of having a difficult parent and the shame that it’s still having such an impact on their lives. I know because I’ve had to work through this myself.
Here are some strategies that can help:
1. Communicate clearly
Be clear and direct with your mother about your boundaries and what you are comfortable with. Use "I" statements to express your feelings and needs, and avoid blaming or attacking language.
2. Set boundaries
Establish clear boundaries with your mother about what you are willing to discuss or share with her. Be firm but respectful, and follow through on enforcing your boundaries.
It’s ok for you to set boundaries that your mother may not be happy about. You are not responsible for her emotions.

3. Stay calm
If your mother becomes upset or defensive, try to remain calm and avoid escalating the situation. Take a break if needed, and return to the conversation when you are both calm.
4. Seek support
Consider seeking support from a life coach or therapist to help you navigate difficult conversations and emotions. A professional can provide objective guidance and support.
5. Focus on the positive
Try to focus on the positive aspects of your relationship with your mother, and find ways to enjoy your time together without allowing her interfering behaviour to take over.
Remember, dealing with an interfering mother can be a challenging and ongoing process. Be patient with yourself and your mother, and focus on developing healthy boundaries and communication strategies.
